A Season In Hell #13: Theme From A Season In Hell

A Season In Hell #13: Theme From A Season In Hell

Sometimes I get nostalgic. I moved a lot in my life, an average of once every two years. I went to ten schools in thirteen years (K-12), and the one thing that was a constant was music. Music and TV. The two things that were constant were music and TV. And family. The three…three things that were constant were music, TV, family and the ever increasing amount of sarcasm that made it into my humor.

I made it down for the weekly KFJC (http://kfjc.org) staff meeting this past week, for the first time in about seven years. I’m hoping to do a show a month there. I’ll keep you posted.

With that I bring you this latest episode. If you’re a fan of nighttime police dramas, then you’ll enjoy this show.

Also, I recently saw Radio Moscow play 12 Galaxies in SF (http://www.12galaxies.com/flash.html). Check out their MySpace page, and support live music. I also have a few San Francisco artists in this show, including punk polka faves Polkacide, the Japanese yodeling cowboy Toshio Hirano, and Sesame Street cover band Cookie Mongoloid; you’ve never heard anything like them before.

A Season In Hell #12: Waiting for the Man

***Warning*** Because of the need for server space, I will be removing Episode #1 and possibly #2 by Thursday, August 2nd, 2007. You have been warned.

I spent a year in DC last week. I was there for an education conference, and I had the luxury of seeing the New York Dolls perform at the legendary 9:30 Club. The club has been open since the 70’s, but obviously in a very different location. What a great club; amazing sound and stage. The Dolls were incredible too. Only Sylvain and Johanson are alive from the original lineup, but the rest of the band seriously kicked ass. They have a new CD out, go get it.

I got to walk “The Mall”, which is the federal gov’t area. Quite impressive, even if you don’t like the schmuck who lives in the white house right now.

This week I include some early NY Dolls. I also have some live tracks from Tom Waits with the Kronos Quartet doing the theme to my favorite show: “The Wire”. If you haven’t seen this great police drama on HBO, you’re missing the best written show on TV. Some live Lou Reed shows up near the end of the podcast today. A real rarity is included in the guise of Neil Young. He never released “Chrome Dreams”, but all of the music made it on to something eventually. This version of “Powderfinger” never did.

I hope you enjoy the show. Please leave a comment on the website: http://johnhell.podomatic.com and tell your friends about thee show by clicking the “send to friends” link on the page.

Thanks.

Howdy radio fans.

I've just posted my latest podcast: A Season In Hell #4: Everything Goes To Hell.

It runs about an hour. It's certainly not the same as radio, but I do try to make it sound like it is. It lacks the spontanaiety of radio that I miss so much. Other than that, I get to turn you all onto music that I love. I found some good new sounds to mix with some tasty classics from my collection.

Find the podcast online here:
http://johnhell.podomatic.com/

And on iTunes here;
http://johnhell.podOmatic.com/rss2.xml

Tell your friends. Also, send me a note if you have any requests or suggestions. I'm just getting warmed up.

Enjoy.

Ladies and Gentlemen:

I am so pleased to announce my triumphant return to…dang, that sounded a bit blech! Let me start over.

Good friends:

You’ll be happy to hear…like I’m expecting you all to slap me on the back or something. Ok, I’ll get it right this time.

Party People:

We’re going to have a funky good time at KFJC 89.7fm (http://kfjc.org), this Thursday, May 3rd from midnight to midnight, with the long anticipated 24 hour “Doing It To Death, A James Brown Birthday Special”, featuring live & rare recordings, interviews, dance contests, fashion show, testimonials and tributes. Hosted by Myself, Spliff Skankin, Hawkeye Joe, KJ Dweller, Mr. Lucky & more.

I’ll be on from 8pm to midnight, bringing the show to its absolute climax with some rare JB’s James Brown instrumentals, and some serious live James Brown you have not heard anywhere!

I hosted several radio shows at KFJC between 1988 and 1997 under the air name Reverend Dah Wave, including a mid-day Jazz/Soul/Funk show, where every day from noon to noon-thirty it was “The Brown Bag Lunch”, 30 minutes of Mr. Please, Please, Please itself. I haven’t done a show there since 1999. It’s the best station in the West, and other than the great WFMU, the tops in all the land.

If you’re close to Foothill JC, in the SF Bay Area, tune in to 89.7FM, if you’re outside the area, please do yourself the favor and tune in any time during the show. Remember: midnight to midnight. You have no excuses.

Now, go on out and do you thang!

John Hell
Aka: Reverend Dah Wave (at least for one more night)

I Started Podacsting

Howdy all.

So I've been truly jonesing to do some radio for the
past few years. I mean really jonesing badly. Today I
found this site that will host some podcasts, so I
figured why the hell not.

The first one is mostly music, with me blathering for
a few minute between tracks. To be honest, I recorded
it on my MAC, via Garageband and iWeb last summer, but
I hadn't done anything with it until now.

I promise to put some effort in at least once a week.

Please subscribe to the podcast, by copying the URL
below and pasting it into your iTunes subsribe
browser.

http://johnhell.podOmatic.com/rss2.xml

Let me know what you think.

Thanks.

Enjoy.

okay.....

i'm trying to set up a system that can have multiple broadcasters come through on one stream....i'm going to use dyndns.com for the url.....

but how can i have djays from multiple locations sync into one ip address.....(for free)....that is..

i'm looking for a host who can accept input from multiple ip addresses, and connect with dyndns on only one output....does this make sense?

oh...and i also do not want to have a computer that is dedicated server.........i want the whole system to be mobile....

any ideas?

It's time for another installment of the Ol' Dirty Masterbeater series of house music mixes. Volume 2 is now online for when you feel the need to....well whatever suits your fancy I guess.

Volume 2 is a bit different than the first volume, its a bit moodier and has hints of tech here and there, the funky tracks are there along side some raunchy dirty tracks as well.

Feedback, positive or negative, is always welcome, encouraged, and appreciated.

Why are we here?

It is a question that has haunted mankind for as long as mankind has haunted this planet. But that doesn't mean you should answer it. Screw that. Instead, explore what is happening now, as you travel down the Hallalujah Trail.

I am just a lonesome voice that has chronicled what is happening since 1995 on Internet radio, having come from the brick-and-morter world of broadcasting where destiny was my child and fate was my hunter and Hunter was my electric fan.

So it is that Cotolo Chronicles every week live and as a podcast, too. So it is that we are here, in part, to find our part in the whole, which we are digging deeper every day.

But spreading it with flight and fancy is my agenda. So go to my tribe page, download the latest mp3 of the program, join me and I will promise you that the world we live in may not be a better place because of our friendship, but, we will at least know that we are here, even if not why.

And, I am happy to participate in this tribe.

easiest (PC) 1-1 netcast / streaming option?

Wondering on people's opinions about what is the easiest (PC) 1-1 netcast / streaming option?
Don't need an audience, just want to get one musicians signal from their home to our net-ready venue...
quicktime broadcast seems good for this with audio and video on mac...
anyone know of 1-1 streaming software out there that is easier to configure than a shoutcast server?

cheers~!

Hey, I'm looking for good pages to research how to put together/run a streaming internet radio station, especially one that a DJ or caller could talk on air. I found a thing on Skype, and on Shoutcast they have instructions on how to use their site for radio, but is there an all purpose FAQ for beginners? I'd like some idea of the different options out there.

Thanks.

and i get so much mic noise it's crazy. i've tried it straight to a computer, straight to a minidv camcorder, and through a 1/4" adapter to a mixer to a camcorder, and I can't get ride of the overwhelming line-noise.

any ideas? any phone recorders that work for you?

dase 2: online jamming software & pnp in melbourne, australia

greetings... interersted in meeting interested artists who might like to stream to our event one night in melbourne australia? we have a 1mb connection at a venue we do a weekly event at - events called plug n play, and quite mellow, cafe vibe with bar as well... tho the music cranks occasionally... we had a canadian boy do some great live electro recently using a shoutcast server and a 128k mp3 stream and it was great fun... we'd like to add webcam or small vid feeds to this in the future ...

but anyway...

if u already stream - maybe u might be interested in streaming a live set to melb, australia one thursday evening?

drop a line if so : cloudy@va.com.au

and something else of interest perhaps?
aussie (free) software that lets people jam online even over a 56k modem - provided u both have the same sets of samples to start off with.. its called DASE>>..
and we're mad keen to have some online jams with folk...

cheers from oz~!

Hey all,

I have been working on my radio station, trying to get it up and running smoothly for a couple of months now before I start promoting.

I am wondering - for those of you who run radio stations, what would you say is the minimum length of a playlist in order to get a consistent variety of tracks? I'm just trying to get a ballpark figure of what others have done. Right now mine is about 25 hours long, about 350 tracks (playing on random), but I still get a lot of tracks by the same artist next to each other, etc.

I thought it might be helpful if people could post their playlist lengths here?

Starting tonight, tribal transmissions will be transmitting on shoutcast at 7pm PST. We will be playing everything under the sun, and are planning on having a little shindig at the same time, so crazyness may ensue.

If this does well, we hope to make it a weekly thing!

Listening to shoutcast requires winamp on PC or you can use Whamb on mac.

Address: http://64.251.76.171:8000
To use: open winamp, press CTRL + L or "Open Location" and type in the address. Press enter. Ta-daaaaa!

A friend are I are currently hosting a stream on Live365 and are considering taking the site elsewhere. I'm looking at using Shoutcast on a remote host to actually serve the streams so I'm not so concerned with those details but two areas do concern me and I'd like folks input.

One is how the whole licensing deal works? I object to paying an RIAA tax, of which most artists will never see a penny, to basically market their music. That being said I would like to do this as legit as possible. Looking at the RIAA site it looks like the licenses for a not-for-profit start at $500/year which is very rich for my blood not to mention alot more than the $120/year I pay to Live365 for hosting AND licensing. Is anyone actually paying these fees? If so, am I reading it right or are there other, lesser fees for not-for-profit projects?

My second question has to do with estimating overall bandwidth. I'm in the market for a remote host and I've found that market really ranges in how much bandwidth is provided in the monthly hosting fee. How do I go about figuring out how much bandwidth I will need per stream?

Thanks in advance.
